Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 9th grade English at a junior high school in a city of about 86,000 people.

Eighty-eight percent of my students are minority, ninety-two percent qualify for free or reduced lunch, but one hundred percent are smart, amazing kids who deserve the best.

Many of them are independent, self-reliant people who have had to grown up quickly in their 14 or 15 short years. My goal is to make their time with me memorable and special.

Please help me accomplish my goal.

My Project

On this trip, students will get opportunities that reach farther than academic bounds. They will get to spend the day out of the city in a rural, cell phone signal free area. They will be able to pet the horses, explore the park, and roast hot dogs and s'mores on a campfire. Many of my students complained at first, but by the end of the day, they were sad to leave and get back to "everyday life."

The trip will also be rich in academic instruction, as students will attend four workshops to learn about Elizabethan life and acting; following the workshops, students will enjoy a full, Elizabethan style production of a Shakespearean play.

This truly is a rare opportunity for my students, will be the highlight of their year, and is something they will remember for the rest of their lives.
