Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach all subjects to a wonderful class of 30 fourth graders in Washington Heights. Our school is full of dedicated teachers and caring staff members, but unfortunately we do not always receive the funding we need. Last year, my students and I read Shakespeare's Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet (adapted for kids) and performed a reader's theatre of Romeo and Juliet at the end of the year. It was clearly the most rewarding activity for my students, as they left fourth grade with an understanding of and appreciation for one of the most acclaimed authors in history. Furthermore, they began to believe in themselves because they could understand Shakespeare's language and themes, even though they were only nine and ten years old.
This year I would like to expand this unit for my current class. I would like to perform one of Shakespeare's plays for the entire school, complete with costumes, props, and students playing all the roles. This project will build community in my classroom, and expose many more students to the wonders of Shakespeare. It is a special gift to hear students who are struggling in many academic subjects proclaim entire soliloquies by memory. This is an experience my students will never forget.
I am asking for some books to expose the class to Shakespeare and provide learning activities and scripts, as well as some basic costumes that would work for any play the students choose. This project will directly affect about 30 students, and about 150 students will attend the performance. Thank you for considering this proposal.
