Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If truly, "all the world's a stage," then experiencing a play can open up the whole wide world for my students!
My high school seniors attend a high-achieving public charter school in a low-income urban area.
They are incredibly ambitious and hard-working, but they often lack the outside resources to support them in their educational journey that more privileged students take for granted, including books!
My Project
How wonderful to read Shakespeare in the Spring. We'll be reading, studying, analyzing, speaking, and acting Othello for several weeks as we dive into the Shakespeare play whose treatment of the issues of race, power, and isolation make it one of the most relevant dramas for today's world.
"I pray you, in your letters,
When you shall these unlucky deeds relate,
Speak of me as I am; nothing extenuate,
Nor set down aught in malice. Then must you speak
Of one that loved not wisely but too well;
Of one not easily jealous, but being wrought,
Perplexed in the extreme..."
― William Shakespeare, Othello ―
A class set of paperback copies of Othello will allow my students to read, analyze, and act out the play in and out of the classroom.
They will have the resources they need to not only be exposed to the play, but to dig into the language and story and beauty of the Shakespeare's text.
