Shakespeare for All

Help me give my students an opportunity to learn about Shakespeare before entering high school and accommodate their varying Lexile levels (650 - 1550) in the same class!

My Students

I currently teach Advanced English to eighth graders, but the way students are selected to be in "advanced" classes is contingent upon their state testing score; they have to earn at least a "3" or higher (on a five point scale). With that said, the Lexile level of my students ranges from 600 - 1550. Needless to say, I am constantly seeking ways to ensure that I meet the needs of all of my students in the advanced classes while ensuring that the lower functioning "advanced" students have the scaffolding to meet the high expectations. No matter their Lexile level though, all of my students strive to do their best, and I would like to reciprocate that for them.

My Project

In a class of 30 students, the Lexile levels span from 650 - 1550. I need a way to engage ALL readers in the class and help set them up for success in high school. If we can use a text that addresses Shakespeare on an easy to understand level right next to the original text, more students will be inclined to participate and delve into the challenge.

Additionally, it is my hope that we can make learning about Shakespeare and his works even more memorable by incorporating a "talk show" that discusses the play in-depth through character analysis and inferring.

After the reading and the role play, students will have to write a literary analysis.
