"I'll see thee hanged on Sunday first!"
When my students saw Elizabeth Taylor scream this line to an amused Richard Burton, they laughed and understood. I rented this version of Taming of the Shrew, to enhance their understanding of a dreaded Shakespeare play. I passed around the movie to other English teachers teaching the play as well. For students with lower skills (half of my student body), showing a DVD version that was true to the play, helped them to "get it." For those with higher skills, the movies can be used for a class celebration after completing a text. Our English department has a few old VHS tapes of our Shakespeare books. We serve 14-18 year olds-a generation of video games and rap songs. My class burst out laughing at Petruchio and Katherine's wedding scene. I believe that with your generous help, my department can expand that pleasure to all of the Shakespeare plays. A complete Shakespeare DVD library costs $306 (according to amazon.com). Thank you.
