Hello. This is my third year teaching high school English in Brooklyn, NY (this is also my third year teaching, period.) Our school is in its 7th year of existence, and for the first time we are offering electives to 11th and 12th graders. My colleague and I are teaching electives on Shakespeare, and we have been planning these classes together.
We started teaching last week, and we are very excited - our students are too! There's a problem though: our school doesn't have class sets of any plays by Shakespeare other than Romeo and Juliet, which the students already studied. Catherine and I will be teaching Othello, Macbeth, and Much Ado About Nothing.
As of today, we are using photocopies from our own personal texts, but we really feel that the experience could be much more satisfying and enriching if students could each have their own text! Not only would bound books give students a greater sense of ownership of the play, but the photocopies make our students feel, yet again, that they have been short-changed. They have asked for their own copies and complained that our school is cheap; they know very well that students in private schools don't read Shakespeare from photocopies!
