My project was inspired by the Teach for the Planet project, "Shaking with Sustainability." My students are curious and always want to learn hands-on. Anytime we can put science into the hands of our students, the more likely they will visualize themselves in the science and technology fields.
My students are all about technology and would love to find how technology can be tied into their science and engineering curriculum.
They also have started to love using technology that doesn't come with a screen. Too often they think "technology" is only related to computers, smart phones, and televisions. Using circuits, screwdrivers, and wrenches have been a highlight to this group!
My Project
Since our students live in California, they feel they are experts on earthquakes....but do they really understand what is happening below the surface? With hundreds of earthquakes monthly in our area that are too little to notice, the seismometer will help them see exactly what they can't always feel. The tectonic sandbox can give them a great visual of what they can't see.
Just like "Shaking with Sustainability," fracking is not uncommon in California. This will show our students how human impact is playing a role within our environment and how it leads to devastating results during an earthquake.
Our students need to know more about earthquakes than just what to do when one strikes, which to them is less than once every year or so (that they feel).
They need to see how common earthquakes are, what is happening below the surface, and how humans are also inducing some earthquakes with fracking.
