My 6th grade students love science and so do I! But science isn't learned through a textbook and workbook, it is learned through hands on activities. What do we really remember from school . . . our friends, field trips and those hands on science experiments.
My students are outstanding youngsters.
I have high expectations for them and they work hard to meet my expectations. They work hard in all areas - math, reading, and writing . . . but they really have a passion for science. As a female teacher I think it is very important for me to inspire both my male and female students to pursue a career in science. Our world needs creative minds in the STEM fields and through hands on activities I can expose my students to the earth sciences in a way that is engaging and exciting. My students attend a high poverty school in the Central Valley of California which has an unemployment rate of between 15-20%. My students have dreams of attending college and becoming doctors, lawyers, teachers and scientists. I want to keep those dreams alive and inspire my students to continue those hopes and dreams.
The sea floor simulation kit teaches students about sea floor topography, sea floor currents, and plate tectonics. When submerged in a 10 gallon tank, which I have, the model can simulate current movements with colored dye and create volcanic eruption bubbles. With the landform demonstration kit, students can visualize the causes and forces that shape the Earth's surface. The kit consists of a demonstration tray, three pieces of flexible foam, three simulated rock structures, erupting volcano and other materials. The Plate Tectonics guide is developed by the Lawrence Hall of Science and uses activities to simulate research at key geological sites around the world. This guide is an excellent supplement to the sea floor simulation kit and the landform demonstration kit. I have been a part of a science grant in California for the past 6 years, and I will use my knowledge of science inquiry with science notebooks to further my students' knowledge and understanding.
Science must be hands on!
Students remember lessons in which they can discover, touch, and feel. These supplies will give my students the opportunity to see and touch and draw conclusions about how plate tectonics formed our earth. Through the use of these materials my students will be inspired to learn more about our earth. I will also deepen my students' knowledge of plate tectonics through the use of science notebooking.
