Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in Chicago, IL. It houses our preschool through the 8th-grade deaf program. Our students come from various neighborhoods, as our program is a cluster program for the deaf on the southwest side of Chicago. Our students are deaf and hard of hearing. They have severe language delays due to their hearing loss. Reading and language are very difficult for them so they read years below grade level due to these delays. I teach 4th through 8th-grade deaf students in this program and as my students become older, it is a real challenge to find reading materials that are topic appropriate, interesting and motivating but written at a level that they can read and comprehend.
My Project
Attendance is a huge part of student success in school. Many of my students have difficulty with attendance. Being that they are deaf and in 7th and 8th grade, I would like to help them become more independent and not have to rely on their parents to wake them up for school. Often times, they are tardy or absent due to not waking up on time for the bus to school.
Having a Sonic Alert Sonic Bomb alarm clock that I could loan my deaf students, would foster independence, assist with better school attendance and would encourage them to not rely on others to wake them up for school.
Their school success relies heavily on whether they attend school or not.
Many of their families are unaware of the technological devices that are available to them to foster independence. By having some of these available to loan out, the families could learn about the technology and hopefully begin providing their child with some of the great resources that are available to deaf people.
