My students need hands-on materials including individual rekenreks, addition fluency puzzles, and various other manipulatives and math games to help them practice their math skills.
Learning is an adventure full of endless possibilities. I have the pleasure of working with a group of fun, energetic, curious first graders with a genuine desire to learn. A number of my students live in an environment where they must face obstacles on a daily basis. Even so, they come to school with a smile and a belief that they will do great things. Their questions amaze me and I look forward to where the year will take us.
My favorite thing about first graders is their ability to look at a problem in unique ways.
They are not confined to seeing a challenge from one perspective, but rather are able to use multiple approaches to reach a solution. I have learned so much from watching them explore and discover and am in constant awe of what they can do.
My Project
Math is something we use on a daily basis whether we are shopping at the store, figuring out how much time until the next activity, or counting out the number of snacks needed for each child. This important subject can be a challenging. However, with flexible thinking and lots of practice, math can be a lot of fun.
Having these materials available for students will allow the math standards to be presented and practiced in a variety of ways and will enable students to be actively engaged in their learning.
The donations to this project will help my students gain a deeper understanding of mathematics and how to approach a problem. The rekenreks will grant students the ability to see and work with parts of ten and twenty. The math match ups and addition fluency puzzles will help students secure their number sense and build fact fluency during math workshop time. In addition the math warm-ups will be an excellent activity for transitioning students as they begin their guided math time.
My hope is that my students become confident math learners who are not afraid to attempt a challenge. Supporting this project will help our class reach this goal and will make math what it should be - FUN!
