Our county is one of the few in Florida that still have 6th graders in elementary school. Even with those numbers, we are still one of the smallest in the district. Being one of the smallest school out of 26 elementary schools makes my school unique. Our numbers are always fluctuating due to our location in the middle of the county and as well as our Montessori and ESE programs. We are in a lower economic area of the county, but that makes our school a close-knit family! We don't let our economic standing hold us back from top quality learning. We are lucky to be a neighborhood school, where none are bused, and all our students know each other inside and outside of school.
My students are just amazing: creative, talented, always thinking fearlessly outside the box - they are not afraid to sing, dance, act, or try new ideas - because our newly established Montessori program supports their exploration of the world around them.
They aren't afraid to ask and answer questions in my classroom because "FAIL" is not a word in my classroom vocabulary! Their progress drives our lessons and learning experiences.
My Project
This project will support our students by protecting them from the fierce sun whenever we are out on the field, which is practically every day it doesn't rain. The Florida Sun doesn't let up between the months of April and November.
Our field doesn't have any shade to help alleviate the extreme force of the Florida Sun, so canopies would be appreciated by all who have to encounter the severity of the sun.
The Track Team and Run/Walk programs would greatly benefit from the use of a canopy. Students are always complaining about not having enough shade, especially during our hottest months.
We would also use the canopies for any outdoor events that have volunteers and students who deal with the elements: carnivals, food truck fundraisers, Field Day, Water Day, etc...
