At our school, our Rider Team is made up of a diverse special education population of about 30 students and 7 teachers/staff. Many of our students have been together for their entire school career as our school feeds from just 3 schools.
Our students are sweet, caring and persistence as they work rigorously to learn everyday despite their disabilities.
They support each other and would do anything their teachers ask. They are curious and demonstrate growth to us every single day.
My Project
Science has proven that fluorescent lights, while cost-efficient for schools and districts, are not the best light source for students to learn under. Psychology Today shares that these lights can increase tics, seizures and and stress reactions. Increased headaches and anxiety also are common side effects of the lights that we think nothing of flipping on every day.
With the addition of these light covers, we will be able to reduce eye strain, decrease headaches, and facilitate a calmer learning environment for our students.
As a teacher, I consider my classroom to be my second home and try to make it as welcoming and comfortable for my students as I can. By adding our light covers, we are lucky to be able to add color and depth to our ceiling to enhance the environment as well as improve the learning space.
This project covers 4 different special education classrooms and allows for our entire team to receive the covers to share within our four rooms. As a team, we constantly are meeting to reflect and collaborate, so this project benefits our students as much as it benefits our teachers!
