I am a special education high school teacher. My duties include sex education with emphasis on abstinence, prevention of teen pregnancies, and awareness of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). It is no secret that many teenagers are oblivious to the repercussions that unprotected sex can have on their lives. This is more prevalent with special education students whose disabilities make it difficult to develop the necessary skills, comprehension, and application of knowledge to effectively deal with these problems. This proposal is for an item called Pregnancy Profile Vest. Simply put, this is a vest-like garment that when worn by teenage girls replicates the actual appearance and feel of a third trimester pregnancy. Acquisition of this item would allow me to bring an element of reality to my instruction. My students would be able to walk around wearing the item and experience the discomfort that many mothers-to-be experience. Additionally, both male and female would be able to see the physical changes to their bodies. I strongly believe this item would be a much needed deterrent to teen pregnancies, especially for disabled teens.
