My students need two Singer sewing machines.
All students need a place that is safe for them to explore who they are or who they would like to become. The theater is the perfect place to do just that. Either on stage or behind the scenes there is a task and learning opportunity for every learner.
In the high school there is a great program called technical theater.
In this course students get to explore several aspects of the theater's technical productions. Students build the sets and props, design costumes, work on lighting, and learn about stage management. This course is completely hands-on and operates under the principles of STEAM and the engineering design process. However, every year a section of the work is left undone because of the lack of technology available. Students design amazing costumes for actors every year but they lack the sewing machines needed to complete their original work. This project will provide two machines that will allow students' designs to come to life. Several teachers are willing to share their skills and are excited about adding to the current curriculum and students are excited to learn a skill otherwise lost in schools. The addition of these machines will allow the engineering design process to be complete.
A costume workshop is being created where students can design and complete their one of a kind pieces of art. The space has everything students would need: fabric, tables, cutting tools, and instructors. However, it has no machines to complete the sewing. The completion of this project and the addition of these two machines will allow our costume shop to come alive. These particular machines will be used by countless students year after year to bring to life their original designs. Each show and performance calls for something new and unique and these machines will allow students to answer that call by designing and producing amazing costumes.
These machines will allow for a better education for every student who takes technical theater.
What is being presented is a true STEAM concept from the initial design, the scaling of measurements, the integration of technology, working with multiple materials, and the use of the engineering design process. This project will provide students with a truly unique opportunity to actually watch STEAM education come to life on the stage.Read More
