My students need these 4 sewing machines to complete curriculum projects, as well as, community outreach projects; basic sewing skills will be used now and into adulthood.
Do you remember taking Home Economics in high school? Have you ever ripped a pair of pants on your way out the door or needed to repair your favorite jacket? Today's family and consumer sciences classes still teach students some of these basic life skills. Many of our sewing machines are irreparable.
Students enrolled in family and consumer sciences class are in the 9th thru 12th grade.
These students are excited to begin their futures and many understand the importance of basic life skills needed to manage their future careers and family life.
These students are enrolled in public education and attend family and consumer sciences classes as an elective course. For so many of today's students this course may be their only opportunity to learn how clothing is constructed, how to make good consumer choices about clothing and housewares items, and most importantly, how to mend them when they are damaged.
Family and consumer sciences' students are also introduced to basic clothing construction, which will allow them to produce projects inspired by patterns or expand their own imagination to create original designs.
My Project
These machines will be perfect for a wide range of sewing and quilting projects. Students will complete basic sewing projects in class such as: pajama pants or rag quilts. Students will learn sewing terminology, the parts of a sewing machine, and basic techniques needed to complete beginner sewing projects.
I can't tell you how often a student comes into my class in need of a small clothing repair.
Too often these students do not have the money to take their clothes to anyone for repair. Basic sewing skills are needed throughout life to repair our own clothing, as well as, our family members' clothing. Basic sewing classes may also inspire tomorrow's next designer or your community's next award winning quilter. Your donations will be greatly appreciated and these machines will be used for years to come.
