My Students

Our school is a publicly funded charter embracing a philosophy of learning through community-based projects, which are conducted as collaborations between different subject areas. Our students are admitted through a lottery to create a population representing the diverse county - including a range of socioeconomic classes, learning levels and military families - that we are part of.

Operating in our project-based environment, my students have access to a great deal of personalization, hands-on activities and community interactions as they support each other during the course of their learning.

With rich opportunities to take on different roles during their projects, my students are able to learn in engaging, authentic, real-world settings.

My Project

My students have worked hard to construct two 12-foot Swampscott Dory's - shallow draft sailboats - that are ready to hit the water and empower a great deal of future learning activities. For the second phase of this project, we will be designing and sewing sails that will empower our boats to function in the bays and ocean around San Diego.

My students will be collaborating with a local sail manufacturing company to design, fabricate, test and install sails for our boats.

This will create an amazing opportunity for the members of my class - made up of diverse learners, military families and students from varied socioeconomic backgrounds - to collaborate with professionals, learn design processes, engage in hands-on manufacturing, and get out on our boats to explore the waterways that are integral to our community.

This sewing machine will help us finish our boats to a professional standard while also creating an engaging and hands-on & real world learning opportunity for all my students.
