My students live in Anchorage, Alaska in one of the most diverse school districts in the nation. We are a Title I school that focuses on SEL and making all students feel welcome and successful.
In Family and Consumer Science, students are excited (and sometimes a little nervous) to try out new skills for the first time.
They often come in to FACS not knowing what the class is, and leave with so many skills to prepare them for real life. They learn cooking, sewing, personal finance, career preparation and childcare in my class. Sometimes a few students will wonder out loud why they have to learn sewing, but those are the same students who visit me the next year and are so proud to show me that they repaired their own clothing.
They are so young, and yet they are able to accomplish so much! They have a blast working collaboratively with each other during class and are so proud of themselves when they have a finished project to take home.
My Project
Sewing is a big part of Family and Consumer Sciences, but many of our supplies for this unit are old and outdated. We currently have just one very old iron for our class which could stop working at any time. It can be difficult to time projects when a class of 30 students is all sharing only one iron. Two new irons would allow us to replace the old one when it goes, as well as allow more students to iron their projects at the same time.
The irons and fabrics will help us upgrade our old existing supplies and take things to the next level.
Besides upgrading the old iron, new fabrics with fun prints would help get students more excited to create their projects. One of our main sewing machine projects is making pillowcases. Students would be interested in the new fabric prints and would love to have more options for choices. I want them to be able to take home a pillowcase that they love and want to keep.
