This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a K-8 school designed to meet the needs of students with ADHD, Autism and other related disorders. Ninty-three percent of our student population has an IEP for reading, math and/or behavior deficits. Most of our students come from traditional public schools in low income areas and the most common concern from the parents and students when they tell us why they’re looking for a new school is that the student is being bullied because of their disability from other students at their current school.
Our students have sensory issues, background trauma, intellectual deficits, social and emotional issues, and struggles with relationship building.
We have students on the spectrum that do our morning announcements over Google Meet, a video chat. We have students with ADHD who help our custodian around the building. We have great kids with unique problems and personalities. There is never a boring day.
My Project
Our students will have to opportunity to create clothing, quilts, bags, and other accessories with these sewing materials. We have students who would like to make sensory items for their peers in our school with Autism and sensory needs. They would like to be able to mend their school uniforms and create something special that is their own.
Our students need practical skills to help them at home and in their future lives.
We are hoping to offer these skills to them and weave wonderful memories of school in the process.
We are also encouraging parent participation with their students.
