My Students
My students are in a special day class for students with intellectual disabilities, in a moderate/severe setting. There are a wide range of disabilities including Down's syndrome, autism, brain trauma and many disabilities from unknown causes. My students persevere through all academic and social challenges with a smile. Most of my students ride the school bus anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours just to come to school each day. A few come to school with disabilities so severe they require a nurse at all times, and they continue to do this each day with a smile. They work hard and try their best in all areas, and they continue to surprise me.
My Project
My class has been very busy learning to sew. They have made pillow cases, pillows, and hats. We have struggled with very old machines and most of the class time is fixing the machine so that it will work. We now have two new machines but the wait time for a turn on the new machines is very long. It can be frustrating to sew on a machine that continues to break down or having to wait half of the period for your turn on the new machine.
With a new sewing machine we can reduce the wait time for getting on the machine and it won't break down.
Also with this machine we can control how fast it stitches no matter how hard the presser foot is pushed. Many of the students struggle with fine motor development that makes sewing a challenge but they don't give up.
All of the students have a list of projects that they hope to complete. With another new machine the students will be that much closer to being able to accomplish all of their projects.
