I work with 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students with Mild/Moderate Cognitive Impairments. My program allows my students to participate with General Education Students for Exploratory Classes while learning core subjects (Science, History, Math, English) at their instructional level.
My Home Living course provides students with life skills they will use in their young adult lives.
Projects include cooking, cleaning, sewing, safety, community safety, etc. Students are able to gain independence and self confidence as they gain these vital lifelong skills.
I work with students who have Mild to Moderate Cognitive Impairments. While my students are gaining core academics, one of the most important components of my class is that my students are working towards independence. The sewing machines will provide the students with the opportunity to create unique and functional projects. They will have the experience to learn the basics of sewing and this will allow them to become much more adept at the skill of sewing. The skill of sewing will allow them to create items for use in their own homes. They gain confidence as they are able to perform the act of sewing and gain more and more expertise with every project.
