Sewing for Everyone

Help me give my students with disabilities the ability to participate in Family and Consumer Science class with their peers through the use of a computerized sewing machine.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Renee's classroom raised $266

My Project

The typical sewing machine used in a middle school Family and Consumer Science (FACS) requires the use of both hands and good foot control to operate. These sewing machines have a lever that needs to be held to backstitch, a pressure-sensitive foot pedal for operation, and a needle that must be hand threaded.

Having a computerized sewing machine with a push button backstitch, push button stop/start, and automatic needle threading will help students with disabilities participate in FACS class with their peers.

The push button backstitch accommodates students with limited hand strength to maintain pressure on a backstitch lever. The push button start/stop allows for a student with limited lower extremity control to safely start and stop the sewing machine. Students with limited dexterity can use the automatic needle threader to successfully thread a sewing machine. Students can be more independent with sewing projects and more fully participate with their peers.
