This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 9th Graders at the only public high school in our city in Massachusetts. They deserve not only the access to a high quality academic start to their freshman year but also an engaging and exciting start. Our students are 30% students receiving special education services, 30% English Language Learners, and almost all qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.

By supporting our students academically and giving them opportunities to be engaged, we set up students for a strong start to their educational future.

My students need to not only learn a lot when they come to school, but they need a reason to keep coming back!

My Project

Our students have the opportunity to participate in lab for the last hour of the day, four days a week. These labs combine both academic content and enrichment to provide students the supports they need to be successful and stay engaged in their 9th grade year. As a former math teacher, I am excited to marry my love of teaching mathematics with my love of sewing!

Our sewing lab will help 9th graders flex their creativity, become proficient problem solvers, and gain skills working with textiles.

Students will use math and writing skills to design and reflect on their work and they'll use communication skills to understand the patterns in front of them and communicate their ideas to their classmates.

We need the basic hardware like sewing machines, irons, rotary cutters and rulers so that students can learn the basics of sewing by machine. In order to make this course fulfilling and enjoyable we also need things such as fabric, pillow forms, and zippers to bring students' projects to the next level!
