Jasper Missouri is a small rural town in the southwest corner with only approximately 1000 residents. Of those 1000 residents only 30% have children who go to our school. These students come from low income families, who have to travel 20 minutes to the closet grocery store. Going to the grocery store, isn’t the only problem Jasper has.
The students are seeking the enrichment of hands on initiatives that teach them how to have successful lives after high school.
As the Family and Consumer Science teacher as well as a Career and Technical educator, I see the need to develop these needs.
Family and Consumer Sciences is a very holistic program that adapts and conquers to the daily tasks of the individual, family, and society. A class that every child needs to have to learn how to live life fully. Not only does this class, teach the students life skills, the program conveys an understanding of Career and Technical Education, which will train them for the career of their choosing.
My Project
Students today do not know how to use a sewing machine, often they will throw away clothes that have a little hole.
With this sewing machine, I will be able to teach them how to repair their clothes, as well as make their own original garment.
They may even be able to make Fashion Apparel a career in the future. This class is a basic design course encompassing in the fashion design process from inspiration through production. Focus is on terminology, design elements and principles, the creative process of inspiration documentation and design experimentation. With the sewing machine the students will be able make to garments that they design.
