Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a great group of 2nd graders at a school which emphasizes becoming well-rounded global citizens. While we are diverse in many ways, as a whole, our school's population qualifies us as a Title I school. This means we have a large population of students who rely on assistance from resources like our free lunch program.
My class is full of energetic, curious and kind 2nd grade ladies and gentlemen.
They love to learn, investigate and teach one another.
My Project
My students ask to make things in class all the time. When I asked them what they were interested in, they all said they want to make something. They took it a step further and started to discuss what they have been learning about on YouTube. The conversation took an unexpected turn when they started to discuss that they liked watching people sew things. I asked if they have ever sewn before. Very few kids have had this experience. What a great way for the students to practice measurement, addition, subtraction, spatial relations and fractions!
"Are you really going to give us needles to make things Mrs T?" Absolutely because you can learn how using it will unleash a world of possibilities for you.
What a teachable moment and life skill for my students to learn and experience.
We are requesting the felt sheets, fabric glue, buttons, thread, needles, pipe cleaners and stuffing in order to create our very own creatures that we can sew together. Some students mentioned that they want to make things for themselves and others want to make it to give away.
