My Students

My students are culturally diverse. Their diversity is their commonality, however. My students don't focus on their differences. They accept each other as they are. This is what makes them special in my eyes.

My students are curious.

They seek to explore the unknown and they prefer to do that in a hands-on manner. A majority of my students don't have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities that support or enhance their education. School is often their only connection to a brighter future.

My Project

My school is very rural. The elective course offerings are limited. The STEAM Makerspace that I have in the library offers students a small variety of subjects that they can explore during activity times and before and after school. We have robotics, coding, digital media, and some arts and crafts materials. I believe that I need to offer my students a better balance of Makerspace materials to appeal to students with other interests, such as sewing and crocheting.

I want my students to learn skills that could potentially have lasting impact in their lives.

Using a sewing machine is a skill that requires access to a sewing machine. Students will be able to read the how-to books and then they will be able to bring their ideas to fruition with that access. The same can be said for the crochet hooks and how-to books to accompany them. Empowering my students with choices and with opportunities to create things with their own hands increases their self-esteem and their overall academic success.
