"The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." What a powerful message to share with beginning readers!
My kindergarten students come from a low economic background.
Because of either impoverished homes, single-parent families, or situations out of their control, my children do not experience the simple pleasure of being read to at home. Therefore, they thoroughly enjoy books and when I read to them ... especially Dr. Seuss books!
My students need 10 Dr. Seuss books and a small book cart to store the books in for easy access. The ten read alouds by Dr. Seuss will improve kindergarten language skills such as phonic identification, rhyming, word families, beginning and ending sounds, and fiction elements. Most important, the books will be a motivator to develop reading skills. The lively text from these books will turn my students onto reading. The rhymes and nonsense will delight my children and make them want to read more. As I am teaching rhyming and word families, I will read and reference the books. We will use the silly rhymes to generate more rhyming patterns. I will also use the Dr. Seuss books to teach story elements. The unforgettable characters and events will serve as lessons on setting, main character, conflict and solution. I will display the books in the reading cart. By doing so, the children will have easy access to them, fostering their independence, with the ability to locate, choose, and enjoy them on their own.
My project is so important to me because I want my kindergarten students to learn to love reading.
I already know they enjoy Dr. Seuss stories. I believe these ten books will excite them into becoming early readers. Just seeing the books available to them on the cart will serve as motivation. Dr. Seuss said, "You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself, any direction you choose." Steer yourself in the direction of molding a young mind to love to read!
