My students need 120 copies of a variety of Dr. Seuss classics in English and in Spanish to fall in love with books and reading! These books will be given as prizes at a Spring Literacy Carnival.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The World of Dr. Seuss is a joyous carnival ride that blesses the reader with an education as well as a good time! It's hard to pick a favorite. My class of first graders tend to love them all. When our Spring break was canceled our team of teachers decided to fill that week with spirit and Seuss!
My students are curious and earnest.
About one quarter of my class has some form of learning disability and services are few and far between. Our school is a Pre-K-8 neighborhood school in an impoverished, urban setting. Our student population is very international. About 25% of my students are identified as English Language Learners and many more speak another language at home. Many of our students come from single parent households. Poverty, and the harsh realities of life are all too real for many of our students. Many depend upon our school, not only for an education, but also for two meals a day, medical care, and such necessities as a new winter coat. Many of our students experience turmoil and loss in their home life. I think in many ways school is for some their only refuge of comfort. The other day during guided reading one of my more troubled kids looked up at me and said,"I love this School." Once again I was reminded of how special our school is.
My Project
If life gives you lemons, then make lemonade. It is in that spirit that my colleagues and I conceived of : A Carnival of Seuss! That is how we plan to celebrate during the week of school that would have been our Spring Break. Two crazy storms made a mess of our school year and now we have to forfeit our April Vacation. Needless to say this is going to be disappointing for everyone so we are on a mission to make that week joyous and memorable. Our Seuss themed Spirit week will finish with a Seuss themed Carnival and these books will be given as prizes to champion readers and contest winners. The goal is for each student to go home with a brand new Dr. Seuss book and lots of wonderful memories of the "Vacation" week they spent in school. Our school community will soon be emerging from a long hard winter, and this Carnival of Seuss will bring a much needed pick me up at a time when the kids will be long overdue for a break. A dose of Seuss will be just what the doctor ordered!
This Carnival of Seuss will bring light and literacy to a dark year.
Our students need meaningful celebrations that strengthen not only their minds but their sense of community. Students thrive when they know that we love, and care for them, that we will always endeavor to lift their hearts and minds. As the Good Doctor wrote in The Lorax, "UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."
