I am a first year teacher with the exciting opportunity to impact little minds and hearts every day as a kindergarten teacher. I am beyond excited to begin this journey in my teaching career with students that are at the beginning of their formal learning voyage. I haven’t met my students yet but know that they will be a diverse group of kiddos with varying backgrounds, interests and abilities. I am eagerly awaiting that first meeting and planning my classroom to be the magical place that they realize that they have the ability to do and be all things. I have come to realize that there are many necessities that teachers (especially first year teachers) need in order to create that caring and inclusive learning environment.
My Project
Research has found that students thrive on a well-organized classroom with structure, routine and procedures. These are all a necessity in a kindergarten classroom. The items that I have requested are to be used to help my kinders during morning meetings and also during center time (pocket chart and calendar). I have also requested a teacher chair to be used during read alouds and whole group lessons as well as some soft seating for students to use while engaging with the classroom library. The kinders sit at tables rather than desks so l also requested seat pockets to hold their materials. I have also requested an electric pencil sharpener for student necessity and efficiency. These are all supplies that teachers need to create a functional and engaging learning environment.
