Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at an ethnically and linguistically diverse Title I school in East Oakland where over 90% of students receive free or reduced price lunch. A majority of students speak Spanish at home, and in order to better serve our community, we are moving towards becoming a Dual Immersion school. We have already begun this transition in kindergarten, and in 2018-2019 the program will expand to include 1st grade.
My room is filled with the most brilliant second graders you'll ever meet.
Most students come from families with limited educational backgrounds, and our school culture is oriented towards ensuring that all our scholars are able to achieve their full potential. We value strong school-community relationships, and work together with parents/guardians to ensure a bright future for every child.
My Project
Like many districts across the country, my school district has been facing increasingly draconian budget cuts in recent years. Gone are the days when teachers could rely on basics -- paper, pencils, whiteboards, etc. -- being provided for in the school budget. While families and teachers are able to fill some of these gaps, having plenty of high-quality materials available for all students to start the year rather than scrambling for the basics frees up valuable time and energy.
The resources outlined in this project will allow me to start the 2018-2019 school year STRONG with my bright young scholars.
Ticonderoga pencils will ensure that students aren't wasting precious minutes dealing with funky constantly-breaking pencils that just won't ever sharpen quite right (a constant source of angst!) A steady supply of just-right-sized, all-black, quality expo markers will mean that students are not arguing over who gets which color, as they solve math problems or participate in guided spelling on their new two-sided whiteboards. Color-coded poly folders will hold up to a year of handling as students take homework home each evening, or bust out a writing or reading folder with inserts that scaffold their learning each day.
Meanwhile, I am lucky to have gotten 12 Chromebooks from previous Donor's Choose projects. This is a huge gift, as the Chromebook carts provided by our district are in utter disrepair, with missing keys and trackpads that barely function -- and they're meant to be shared across classes! The twelve Chromebooks I now have thanks to Donor's Choose are just shy of a half-class set for my likely class size of 25-26 students. One more Chromebook, and a half-class set of reliable Lakeshore headphones (with cords that avoid the disaster of tangles!) will allow me to fully leverage technology in my classroom.
