Our students are from a rural area in Central Virginia. They are from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. Students are enthusiastic learners however many do not have supportive home environments. They are often from single parent homes and many of them travel back and forth between parents during the week. This makes settling in and feeling secure in their learning environment very important. I also currently have an ESL learner from Puerto Rico. My students are anxious to work together with their peers and this provides equally important opportunities for the English students to learn about another culture.
My Project
Students learn best in an environment where they are comfortable and can work with their peers to build collaborative relationships that extend their learning experiences beyond the classroom. By removing the barriers of tables and traditional chairs the students will be able to comfortably work together. Wobble stools provide students with seating choices that fit their needs which will improve student academic achievement.
Research shows that by providing choices in the academic learning environment we can teach them to make responsible decisions.
I also hope to grow creative learners by using new and innovative teaching strategies that engage students by creating room transformations like Pirates and Superheroes for teaching r-controlled vowel phonics sounds. Building excitement for learning helps students take ownership in their academic experience. Restructuring the classroom with flexible seating and implementing new and innovative teaching strategies is going to raise student engagement and help them grow together.
