Welcome to our English Language Arts classroom in Gwinn, Michigan. Our high school is tucked in the pines in the beautiful and remote Upper Peninsula.
My students are quirky, fun, and high energy.
I teach 10th through 12th graders whose interests range from playing sports to participating in drama camp to showing farm animals at the county fair. I love to nurture a passion for reading and writing and to help students develop their voices. These teenagers have a lot to say to the world!
My Project
In celebration of our reading the epic poem "Beowulf," my seniors are going to perform fight scenes between Beowulf and the monsters including Grendel, Grendel's Mother, and a dragon. We are requesting tapestries to hang on the wall, jeweled goblets and apple juice for our warriors in Herot, and green posterboard for an art project where we will be playing Pin the Arm on the Grendel.
We already have a few costumes, but we would like to add costumes for King Hrothgar and Queen Welthow, a mask for the dragon, and barbarian garb for Beowulf.
I plan to have students use a form of Japanese storytelling called Kamishibai (which means "paper theater") to perform sections of Beowulf. Kamishibai uses a series of large, illustrated cards to tell a story. The entire front side of each card will display an illustration from Beowulf made by the students, while the back of each card will be used to write a portion of the script. The story is not simply read but is performed to an audience using illustrations, speaking parts, and even music.
This set of costumes and props will be used for years to come to help students dig into and remember the characters of Beowulf.
