I have been told that my class is "the Disneyland" of subject areas because no matter what, students are excited and eager to come in and learn about science and social studies. Students leave my class asking why it isn't longer or how we run out of time so quickly!
Although I teach in a middle-class area, we do encompass a large apartment complex and have a wide array of student needs and abilities.
I pride myself on creating an environment in which all students, regardless of their background, abilities, etc. can find success in some way.
My Project
Often due to age we forget that even students 10 and 11 years old get the wiggles. My project 'Setting Students Up to Learn' utilizes the benefits of flexible seating as a way to promote student involvement and success in concepts being taught and participation in lessons and learning. Studies have shown numerous benefits to giving students the opportunity to use flexible seating such as empowerment, choice, health, comfort, and focus.
By offering the option of flexible seating in my 5th grade classroom, I would like to create an environment where students feel as though they have choice, and that given that opportunity of empowerment, are more engaged in the lesson.
Through observation of students in other classes and research I have learned that flexible seating truly does encourage participation and attentiveness to the concepts being taught. As a Science teacher I am excited to see the difference in overall behavior management as well as end of the unit scores as a reflection of student ownership of learning and ability to apply information taught.
