About 200 students spend a portion of their days in my classroom. Each one has the desire to succeed in school, to be accepted, and to have a sense of belonging and well-being. My classroom is an inclusive learning environment where students of all academic and athletic abilities learn to cooperate and support each other in our daily activities. When provided a safe and welcoming environment, even the most reluctant students enjoy developing healthy bodies and minds.
Aside from unit learning goals involving health and exercise, my students learn teamwork, compassion, and perseverance.
As a small, rural school, athletic extracurriculars are a prominent part of many students’ lives, with about 80% of our students participating in some form of physical activity each day—whether through physical education classes, athletics, or our newly implemented intramural program, which allows students to participate in organized physical activities during our hour-long lunch break. These programs not only encourage health and wellness, but also foster healthy relationships with peers and trusted adults.
My Project
My students have requested official indoor soccer goals because they enjoy the game so much. Currently, our "goals" are constructed of tape on the wall and marking cones. Not only does this make it difficult for students and teacher alike to judge whether a shot is a true goal or not, it is also difficult for shooters and goalkeepers to develop necessary skills without physical posts and nets to practice with. With new goals and nets, my students’ experience playing indoor soccer will be more purposeful and rewarding.
Official goals will not only create a more authentic soccer experience for my students, but goals can also be used for other activities, such as various adaptations of ultimate frisbee for team handball and for various kicking and throwing drills.
Overall, new indoor soccer goals will help my students stay fit while having fun.
