This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are eager to learn and grow! They come from various backgrounds. Many come from homes lacking basic necessities and some have very little support and engagement at home. Asking these little ones to sit still throughout the day and expecting them to stay actively engaged is just not fair to them and could potentially cause them to lose interest in learning altogether. I believe that flexible seating will help my students feel as though their classroom is somewhere they can stretch and move all while meeting their full potential.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, standing at a table, or sitting/laying on bath mats with a clip board. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them to complete their work. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, they tend to be more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their assigned desk.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The wobble stools will allow students to sit at a table but it will allow for movement. These stools will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to get the wiggles out. They can also be used as an alternative chair if needed! The milk crates and cushions and the dry erase dots will be used for my small group table. It will be a special place for my groups to come and want to work.
I have seen how choice can positively affect my students' work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
