My students need 40 copies of "The Underdogs" by Mariano Azuela to reach a high bar of excellence as independent readers and thinkers.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My pre-AP students receive only 45 minutes of reading and writing a day. They have high reading levels but rarely have the opportunity to push their learning farther and as a result often fail to grow beyond their current reading levels.
My pre-AP students are a dedicated group of students who strive to do better than they have done before.
They are motivated and have intense desires to learn, however, they often do not have the opportunities, resources, or know-how to independently push themselves to higher levels of achievement. As a group, these pre-AP kids are driven towards academic success and aspire to attend college throughout the country, and as a result, work tirelessly to achieve that goal.
In 45 short minutes, it is often impossible to authentically provide students reading and writing instruction. This group of talented students, however, have the knowledge to learn and read independently. However, too often they lack the resources to do reading independently and push themselves beyond their current growth. Individual copies of "The Underdogs" will allow my students to develop stronger independent reading comprehension skills that provide them stronger foundation for becoming career and college ready. Furthermore, if they are able to read at home, we will be able to use class time to analyze rather than simply use it to do work that these students are able to do independently.
For too long, students have been told they cannot.
However, they very much can. Individual books raise the bar for students to grow independently as readers and to grow their analytical skills in the classroom. By giving students the resources, I truly believe that my students will be able to reach a high level of achievement for this year and beyond.
