My students come from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. I serve English Language Learners, students with special needs, low income and middle class families, and TAG students. My classroom is truly a melting pot of learners with a variety of needs. My goal as an educator is to meet these kids where they are at, build relationships, and inspire them to be the best they can be.
"From Little Seeds Grow Mighty Trees", a hand painted phrase on my classroom wall, serves as a powerful reminder of the potential each of my student's posses.
I want my students to realize that they can make a positive impact in their community and the environment around them. To achieve this, I spent hours transforming my room into a national park to motivate my students to put down their electronic devices and LOOK UP! It's time they see the world around them and go on an educational adventure.
My Project
My students are like sponges. They soak up every piece of information they can get. But like all of us, they can become bored with the same routines. To make learning more interesting and to engage the students, lesson need to come to life. I do this with room transformations. My students will be taking on the roles of a construction worker and a crime scene investigator as they work through various reading and math lessons that coincide with these themes.
The construction and crime scene props that you are giving my students will enable a topic that seems uninviting to transform into something the students are excited about and look forward to tackling.
It's amazing what wearing a hard hat, reflective vest, or fake eyeglasses can do for the motivation level of my students. Participation sky rockets, disruptive behavior decreases and smiles can be seen all around. These are the kinds of experiences my students will talk about for years to come.
