My Students

My school is located close to the coast of North Carolina. We serve students in Kindergarten through fifth grade, about 680 students this year, up from 630 last year. About 34% of our students receive free-and-reduced-lunch benefits. Many of our students are connected to the military due to proximity to a USMC Base and Air Force Base. This is one reason our school population is highly transient. About 75% of our students identify as white, 8% as multi-racial, 5% black, 11% Hispanic, and 1% American Indian. Our students are fantastic performers in many different musical areas! They love getting on our stage and showing their talents!

My Project

Every school year, our school stage is used for various events. Between school assemblies, spelling bees, talent shows and graduations - every student has a chance to go up on this stage and experience the joy of performance. Our music teacher uses it for her grade level concerts, where every student in the whole school gets a chance to stand on the stage and perform a concert once (sometimes twice) a year! This is where this project will be most helpful.

This project will take our little elementary stage to the next level!

Our drama club performs their annual musical, where in years past they put up foam boards to cover the side space of the stage. It has been enough for the last 10+ years, but it is time for us to have real curtains. With this project, the side curtains will turn our stage into a black box theatre space. We will look more professional, and tidy! We will enjoy these curtains for many years, as well as all the students in our school!
