Industrial Arts is a broad category, and when people ask what I teach, my favorite response is, "Students."
One particular student wanted her strengths challenged in new ways. She approached me with a very professional tone about being challenged in other ways.
Her strength to please others through communication and her strength to ensure her actions are performed at her best led me to propose the challenge of coming up with and requesting a shop improvement. Funny enough, she chose an issue I was just beginning to brainstorm on how to address.
Together, we came up with a way for you to be part of the solution.
My students work hard and persist through many mistakes, challenges, and endeavors. We are constantly striving to improve our work environment. A safe, clean, and orderly work environment will help students as they walk into jobs with major companies that employ systems like 5S. Students will understand lean manufacturing concepts better in a shop that utilizes lean manufacturing principals.
Students work together to ensure the organization and cleanliness of the shop are sustained. Students are beginning to understand that their actions can make that job easier or harder and effects the environment and everyone around them.
In Their Own Words
We are trying to accomplish better organization for the shop. We can fit projects better if we receive the donations we need for this project. We will be able to have more class time if we accomplish this project, so we will have more time for more projects and more learning. I’m trying to make the shop more suitable.
I will make the most out of this by trying my hardest to get this donation. I’ll take this project as a learning experience. If we receive the donation I would be really thankful because I had the chance to ask for this donation. I would feel like I accomplished something for my school.
We would be solving a couple problems we have every day in the shop. It’s important to us because it gives the classes in the shop more time to do the things they want instead of finding somewhere to stash our stuff at the end of the hour. It’s also better for Mr. Barbercheck to organize and grade our projects if they are nice and organized.
