This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school is located in the Sonoran Desert where many in our community are caretakers of desert tortoises. In our school's courtyard, we have a desert tortoise named Mijo. At community events, we've noticed that when people see our tortoise habitat, they have a lot of questions about how to take care of a desert tortoise and what plants to find them.

The problem that my students would like to solve is educating others on the proper diet for desert tortoises which they will do by creating a model habitat for Mijo, creating a brochure of nutrient-rich food plants, and giving away plants to community members.

For our service community project, we need seeds, seed-starting soil, pots with humidity domes, a watering can, cloches, and a self-watering system to help the plants survive in our hot desert temperatures.

All of these items will be used by students to lead the service project by growing food plants for tortoises and creating a demonstration habitat to educate community members. In addition, students will use the materials to grow desert tortoise food plants to give away at community events.

Our service project also includes materials for students to share and educate community members.

The first item students will share with the community is plants for their desert tortoise habitat.

Next, students will share with the community a desert tortoise brochure listing plants for a proper diet. These brochures will be made out of cardstock and given away at community events.

To draw people over to the demonstration habitat, we're asking for a large standing whiteboard and materials to create a bulletin board. The whiteboard and bulletin board will be used for educating others on what my students have learned, sharing plant information, and providing a list of food plants for desert tortoises.
