Serve The School! Pre-vocational Skills For Special Needs

My Project

Our middle school students have various disabilities which have impaired their motor, communication, and cognitive skills. Our students work on a variety of skills such as tying their shoes, writing their names, and communicating their needs. This is all in the midst of academics, social interactions, and everyday transitions from point A to point B. We want our students to have more opportunities to build their pre-vocational and life skills as well as improve their social interactions.

We would love our students to have the opportunity to run an espresso cart.

This cart would be available for teachers to purchase items from on a routine basis in the school from our students. This would give our students real-world applications in building their functional skills. Students would be able to work on a variety of skills through this pre-vocational program including their fine motor, communication, and reading skills, as well as their sequencing, problem-solving, and judgment. In addition, this program would provide our students with an opportunity to increase their self-confidence by working for others and becoming leaders in the program. This program is being modeled after an espresso cart program running at a neighboring middle school, which I (Ms. Baber) funded and established through the generous donations of Donor's Choose. The neighboring middle school has been running this program for 7 years now with great success, and we want the same opportunity for our students at JAMS.
