My classroom is a revolving door. Students come in and out at various times of the day for a variety of needs. Each student has individual goals and my dream is for all students to meet and exceed their goals, along with becoming successful learners in their general education classroom.
Our school is a Title I School with a very diverse population of students.
Along with that diversity comes a large span of strengths and needs. I serve all grade levels at our school (Pre-K through 5th), so I see a variety of needs and learning styles on a daily basis in my classroom.
My Project
For children with sensory processing disorder, the lights, sounds, and demands of a typical school setting can be overwhelming. Our school's sensory space is designed to meet our students' therapeutic, emotional, and educational needs. We are requesting light filters to reduce the harsh light given off by the florescent lights of the sensory room. Luckily we have the perfect space for our sensory room, unfortunately we do not have control over the lighting in this area. We are also requesting lap desks and a time timer so students may complete work in this are upon calming themselves. The comfort and fidget muff with be one of many items in the sensory room that students will be able to use for self calming throughout the school day.
In this sensory space, children will have quiet time to escape the overstimulating classroom environment so that when they return, they are available to learn.
By regulating and meeting their sensory needs, students will be more successful across all school settings.
