The students at my school come from a variety of backgrounds. Some come from families who support them emotionally and educationally in all aspects. However, some come from families that struggle to support their children in a variety of ways, either because of the lack of an educational background, financial struggles or a language barrier.
What is important to focus on is ALL of these students are eager and excited to learn more as well as grow in their reading!
They crave knowledge because they know knowledge is power! They are especially excited to grow in their reading skills and are motivated to keep reading more books!
Have you ever been hooked on a book? You can't put it down. It's all you think about. You read and read and read more than ever and then, suddenly... it ends. Now what?
My students need a series of books that capture their attention and motivate them to read more and more!
Series of books such as Magic Tree House, Artemis Fowl or the Chronicles of Narnia inspire students to read voraciously, without roadblocks or pauses. Once they finish the first book in the series, there are more books with the same familiar, lovable characters to choose from.
I have witnessed students getting hooked on a series and it has transformed their reading identity! There is a dramatic change from a hesitant, apathetic reader into an avid reader who is confident and thrilled to read!
We know that the more students read, the more their reading skills will improve! This is why I need more book series or collections in my classroom library. I hope you can help me offer more reading opportunities for my students.
