The enthusiasm with which my East New York 8th graders approach the Lemony Snicket book series makes my own former middle school obsession with The Babysitter's Club series seem like a casual affair. These 8th graders are eager readers, but it takes the right books to awaken this eagerness. The selection in our classroom library is uneven, and many of the books are either far too easy or far too difficult for the students they are meant to entice. I have never seen them read with the intensity and eagerness that they do when these books become available to them. The Lemony Snicket books inspire in these chidren the same desperate, all-consuming passion for reading that I could only have hoped for my students to demonstrate. Unfortunately, my classroom library only has the first 3 books of the series, and our school library has an incomplete set as well. I am requesting 2 sets of the series to stock our shelves--and I'm sure they will fly right off as soon as they arrive. This addition to our classroom would be treasured by these children, and I am confident that they would circulate among the 50 students or so that would gain access to them. They would provoke in my students the kind of drive to read that keeps a child up past their bedtime, hidden under the covers with a flashlight.
