As a third grade teacher, my most important goal during any given school year is to instill in children the love of reading! There is no magic way to accomplish this. It can simply be done by providing a wealth of good books that span many reading levels to ensure a "just right" book for each and every child. Series books "hook" a child on reading by making them care about certain characters. They will continue to follow that character from book to book! I have watched with awe the excitement generated by reading the Henry and Mudge (Level J), Amanda and Oliver (Level L), and the Pinky and Rex (Level L) series books in my classroom. With multiple copies available, children can read and discuss the same book just like adults do in book clubs! Imagine how great that would be!
My school is a small one with the best children in the world! They are eager to learn. Some are below grade level in reading and need encouragement to reach their potential. Most of my students walk to school from the nearby housing project in which they live. They do not always have the materials necessary to help them succeed in school. Books...or the ones they can successfully read are often not available to them. I know the titles that often are missing from the library. These titles are the ones I would so very much like you to donate. While our classroom library might have one or two books from these collections, it certainly isn't enough to keep my students engaged in reading throughout the year.
The three sets of leveled series books, Henry and Mudge, Amanda and Oliver, Pinky and Rex, with four copies of each individual title would allow my 20 third graders to read independently during our literacy block and then have meaningful book talks with their peers for many days throughout this year and in years to come! They will become "hooked" on books!
