My Students

The main focus of this project is to create a culturally diverse, social and emotional learning library wellness center. English Language Learners (ELLs), Special Ed. students, Behavior and Trauma sensitive students are more at a higher risk for dropping out of school and academic failure than their peers.

Many factors can contribute to this; COVID 19 has had an even greater impact on these students academic, emotional health and well being.

Many of these students also suffer from depression and anxiety. This learning wellness center would support all of these students in the process of acquiring life skills,

including: self-regulating coping skill, building relationships, self awareness, self esteem, social interactions, an appreciation for their own culture and others. The learning center is designed to be two fold. First, A culturally diverse library would be offered,

including high interest, low Lexile, Books specific for Ell's cultural, language/vocabulary sensitive. The second goal would be

to create a warm, safe, welcoming space; to encourage a feeling of belonging, and calmness. The Library would provide multiple learning opportunities and resources for struggling readers and ELLs.

My Project

This project will serve a culturally diverse group of students at my school, such as: students struggling with social and emotional needs, ELLs, students with learning disabilities, struggling readers, and students that suffer with depression and anxiety. These students often need a quiet place to feel safe, connect with a teacher or classmate, relax, breathe, re-center, and calm down when feeling frustrated or overwhelmed. The Serenity Book Nook station will allow them to enjoy some learning activities, a variety of culturally diverse reading materials, and have an opportunity to read for enjoyment and entertainment.
