Serene Seats: Wiggle n' Rock a Little, Learn a Lot!
Help me give my students flexible, wiggly seats to help us engage in science and theater projects with focus and ease; our classroom needs 5 HOKKI STOOLS to rotate among learners who have trouble focusing in traditional seating.
I am applying for next year's students (2019/2020), but I already know quite a bit about this group. In our small, rural school, students stay together in their classes each year pre-K to 6th, so we know them well as a group, even before they start the school year. This class has 21 students, is extremely positive, and wants to work hard. We also have a lot of students who need additional academic support, especially reading support, and they need opportunities to move while learning.
I do many hands-on projects with my classes and the students from my new class are already asking me if they will meet local scientists and perform plays next year.
I am excited to integrate theater and literacy with this classroom as we work on growing to understand stories together. They love stories and the stage!
I took a walk on the track with several of my new students and they told me that they love to work hard, but need lots of movement breaks to stay energized. Also, they mentioned they are already thinking of class names because I have each class pick a unique name to bring our community together.
My Project
Next year, my fifth graders love theater, singing, and projects, but they have a hard time sitting still. In order to work on writing and rehearsing plays and designing and building compost bins, we need amazing seating that is available to everyone.
One project we will do on these wiggly chairs is our Lives of Scientists project where we meet with 15-25 local scientists throughout the school year and study the research work they do!
Another project we will do together is to turn our narratives into short plays and perform them for our families during an evening on stage.
