Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We teach in an Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classroom of 23 students at a Title I school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Our students love to learn through hands-on activities and authentic discussions. Our school is truly a barrier free school, serving all students who come through our doors. Helping students achieve their dreams is our goal, providing them with the tools will get them there! Our students are in need of essential resources and materials that will benefit them during instruction.
My Project
My students enthusiastically bring home books from our classroom library every night, and return them the following day for new ones. Unfortunately, the result of all the transportation is causing book covers to rip and pages to wrinkle! My students have been using gallon sized plastic baggies to store books. However, we want to protect and preserve our classroom library in a more environmentally friendly way. We often go through boxes of Ziploc baggies a month, and we realize that it is not sustainable way of going about lending library! We have come to understand that we need to take care of our library and avoid preventable damage to our beloved books. We can do that with "See and Store" pouches that are sturdy and impermeable! Books can be transported to and from school safely without the added worry of rain, snow and jostling bus rides home. Each pouch will be labeled with the student's name and my name so that if they are lost, can be easily returned to our classroom. Bins will help organize materials! Our new rug will allow us to have a comfortable area to read on!
