Help me give my students a zen room in our school to regulate emotions and practice mindfulness with comfortable seating, calming activities, and multiple sensory tools.
My students are PK-6th grade students in urban Omaha, Nebraska and our school serves a wide range of racially, ethnically, socioeconomically diverse students. With that comes multiple forms of trauma causing much stress/anxiety, aggression/anger, and impaired concentration and attention in class.
With over 95% percent of our population receiving free and reduced lunch and 17 different languages represented within our school, we are unique even compared to other schools in our neighboring areas.
Trauma can be detrimental to students' academic achievement, social/emotional development, and post-secondary success. For many students, school is their safe place providing the most structure. This space would best support individual students living with and experiencing trauma and will create and maintain a safe, supportive, trauma-sensitive school.
My Project
For many students with trauma and sensory issues, having access to a sensory room would mean having a safe space of their own to feel regulated and calm. This will greatly improve academic engagement and benefit not only students, but also staff members in being proactive.
This space would provide students with different sensory options and to help them gain a sense of control.
The requested materials will assist in decreasing anxiety and aggression while increasing attention spans and supporting emotional regulation. These interventions will help students cope with the various challenges they face each day while learning appropriate coping skills.
