Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The 10 boys in my class work very hard to earn "Dojo Dollars" so they can shop at the school store on Fridays. They love to earn toy cars, small fidgits, and sensory items like play doh and slime.
The school environment can be very stressful for students with Autism.
They have unique sensory needs. Therefore, students can a "Fidgit Basket" when they are taking a break in class. This basket includes stress balls, spinners and other stress-reduction tools that help students with anxiety.
My Project
The students in my class all have Autism. Students with Autism often have sensory regulation difficulties. They try very hard during the school day to focus and learn; however, it can be difficult for them to keep calm and stay on task.
Offering students stress-reduction toys such as squeeze balls, sensory sand and stretching 'worms' gives students a chance to relax, reset and refocus.
I typically set a timer and allow a 2-3 minute break multiple times a day.
In addition, students who need large muscle movement can use Therabands on their chairs. Students get a beneficial gross motor workout without disturbing other students.
