My Students

My students are all special needs preschool students in the Chicago Public Schools who will be kindergarten age next year. They come to our classroom as 4 year olds either from home, early special education intervention at home, or general education preschool program where they were identified by staff as needing more supports.

We try to do everything we can to create a warm and inviting classroom that children want to come to.

It is often a difficult transition to school for our students and we do everything we can to welcome them. Student-sized rocking chairs will greatly assist our students as they make this transition to our classroom.

Our students love to go to our clam center to play with the few toys we have there now. They like the sensory squeeze toys and the one bean bag chair that I have. They would LOVE more chairs so they didn’t have to take turns.

My Project

Many of our students have tantruming and anger issues. These materials will assist our students in meeting their sensory needs in order to self regulate. Many student seek out this center when feeling emotional. It is a place to stop and take a breathe. More materials in this center will increase the opportunities for our students to self-regulate.

Self-regulation is an important skill needed in order to succeed in school and life.

A child who is able to self-regulate can control their anger and outbursts and continue to focus on learning.

According to a study by Duke University, self-regulation is important for students to develop ways to cope with their strong emotions and focus on instruction. Students need to learn " cope with strong feelings so they don't become overwhelming; learning to focus and shift attention, and successfully controlling behaviors required to get along with others and work towards goals. Supporting self-regulation development in early childhood is an investment in later success because stronger self-regulation predicts better performance in school, better relationships with others, and fewer behavioral difficulties."
